Archeologists are infrequently puzzled about sorting out the reason for the Roman ancient rarities they uncover. In any case, the Roman dodecahedron has everybody puzzled.

More than 100 of these empty, bumpy, metallic polyhedrons with 12 sides have surfaced at exhuming locales generally around focal Europe. As of now, there is no conclusive solution to their capacity or reason.

The baffling mathematical structures comprise copper amalgam.

They range in size from 4 cm to 11 cm, and every one of the 12 pentagonal countenances contains a roundabout opening.

Strangely, the widths of the openings are not indistinguishable in a solitary dodecahedron. They additionally differ starting with one dodecahedron and then onto the next.

The entirety of the Roman dodecahedra has five globular handles at the vertices of the pentagonal appearances.

The varieties in measurements and plans of the dodecahedra, notwithstanding their openings, are astounding.

Discoveries of Roman Dodecahedron

Some dodecahedra surfaced in the relics market and, in this way, need archeological settings.

Others arose in controlled, logical unearthings. Archeologists uncovered the southernmost Roman dodecahedron at Arles in France.

The northwesternmost model comes from a site on Hadrian’s Wall in Northern Britain. One more piece comes from Bordeaux. Moreover, they have likewise surfaced as far east as Vienna and Zagreb.

Did the Roman legion Marcus Crassus get lost in China?

There is a distinct lack of consistency in the archaeological context of the cast dodecahedra.

Roman military camps, public baths, and temples have contained samples.

Dodecahedra surfaced in a Roman theatre, a tomb, and a well that contained numerous discarded items.

Several also turned up in coin hoards, suggesting that they were valued objects.

Even an analysis of the layers of dirt around excavation sites from the second to the fourth century CE provides no clues.

As a result, these variations in the discoveries have confounded those attempting to clarify their function.

Additionally, a complete absence of any mention of them in Roman texts adds to their mystery.

The theory regarding Roman dodecahedron

The most commonly accepted theory is that the dodecahedron was used as a measuring device.

To be more precise, as a range measuring object on the battlefield. The theory suggests that the object was used to calculate the trajectory of projectiles on the battlefield.

This is the reason the objects have different-sized holes in the pentagrams.

A similar theory suggests they were used as a surveying or leveling device. The problem is none of the theories has been supported by proof.

Another interesting theory is that the object was an astronomic measuring instrument used for determining the optimal sowing date for winter grain.

The angle of the sunlight can be measured with the device, and thereby one specific date in springtime, and one date in autumn can be determined with accuracy.

The dates could have been used for specific and important dates in agriculture, for example.

The opposite of the theory is that the dodecahedron was different in size and arrangement.

A widely accepted and common theory is that the object was a religious artifact. This is based on the fact that most of the examples were found in Gallo-Roman sites.

For example, one such object was found in a woman’s burial ground. There are also theories they were used as candlestick holders since wax was found in many of the objects.

Mystery resolved

Here I mentioned a video that clarifies the above facts.

But the undeniable fact is this type of dodecahedron is used as a knitting form for making gloves. The gloves certainly helped to take the chill off the metal spear for holding. Many scars have been founded around the knobs consistent with the process of knitting.

Roman soldiers needed socks or cushions for insulating their hands against metal arms and armor, which chafes and can be very uncomfortable to carry or wear in cold weather.

Different sizes or types of metal used in Roman dodecahedron indicate this is for making various sizes of gloves or leather gloves. The purpose of the holes in the dodecahedron is to make the fingers of the gloves.
